The Padres have acquired Miguel Tejada from the Orioles. There are multiple ways San Diego could elect to use him, and offensively he represents a minor upgrade for the NL West leaders.

In simulations Tejada improves his new team by about a third of a win. The question will be where Bud Black chooses to play the aging infielder. Everth Cabrera, after a solid 2009, has been brutal this year with a triple-slash line of .201/.270/.278. Tejada, while no longer a star, is batting .269/.308/.362 and would represent an improvement.

The problem begins with the simple fact that Tejada can no longer play passable defense at shortstop and UZR shows that he has been well below average the past two seasons at third. Playing Tejada at 3B would certainly be preferable to short, but he would then force Chase Headley to the outfield.

In short, Tejada represents a small upgrade at the plate, but any gains made could likely be given back due to his weak glove.
