Why I Hate the Vikings

First off, an admission: I am not a Cowboys blogger, nor a Cowboys supporter. I am NFL Blog Blitz's NFC East editor and a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears.

That leads me to the second point: I hate the Minnesota Vikings. As much as Jerry Jones hates people criticizing his video board, I despise the group of players wearing purple and gold. They talk a lot, they complain a lot, yet when it matters most, they never win.

Remember their 41-0 loss to the Giants in the 2000 NFC Championship game. Or when kicker Gary Anderson shanked his first field goal of the season in the 1998 NFC Title game, making the 15-1 Vikings the most successful team to miss the Super Bowl. How about pretty much every other big game Minnesota has been in, including four Super Bowls, all of which saw them on the losing end.

Now no team is perfect, and every franchise is going to have their ups and downs. But as a completely biased observer, it seems to me the Vikings never back up the trash their players spew out. But enough about history. Here are my top five reasons I hate the 2009-10 Vikings.

5. Brad Childress

While he’s great at dressing up as The Fugitive’s Dr. Richard Kimble for Halloween, he is the most irritating coach to watch, even if you are rooting against his team. When the game is going on, Childress looks as if he’s watching paint dry, rarely changing his facial expression no matter if his team just scored a touchdown or his quarterback is stabbing him in the back. Not to mention, he is one of the worst play-callers in the entire league. The biggest advantage the Cowboys have this game is Wade vs. Childress, and yes, I know about Wade’s history.

4. Adrian Peterson

No doubt, Peterson is a great player. He’s run for more than 1,300 yards in each of his three seasons and scored an astounding 40 rushing touchdowns since he came into the league. But I hate Peterson because, as a football fan, he could be so much better than he already is. (Note: As a Bears fan, I really appreciate this) Every time it seems like he’s ready to take over the game, like Emmitt used to do in the ‘90s and Walter Payton did in the ‘80s, Peterson puts it on the ground. This year he had seven fumbles, losing six of them. Peterson can single-handedly win a game for Minnesota, but he’s as likely to lose it.

3. Ragnar

They say a picture says 1,000 words.
Enough said.

2. Jared Allen

Talk about a guy who loves to run his mouth. Allen is an elite player, but an even better enemy. It’s just a lot of fun to hate him. From his ridiculous mullet to his lack of understanding of the English language, (I don’t think anybody on this team knows what schism is, let alone could use it in a sentence. I thought it was an STD when I first heard it.) he defines what it means to be a target of opposing fan. Not too much would please me more than seeing Flozel Adams doing one of his famous leg whips and tripping Allen onto that hard Metrodome rug.

1. Brett Favre

No surprise at No. 1. Rooting against Favre, especially for a Bears fan like myself, is like rooting against traffic jams; It just comes naturally. Not only do I hate his on-field demeanor - yes Brett, some of those interceptions are your fault - but his all about me attitude angers me beyond belief. I had no problem with him telling the Packers that he needed time to decide if he was ready to retire. But once he said he was done, what did Favre expect Green Bay to do, just fold up the team? His play-me or trade-me stance in the summer of 2007, after he had cried like a toddler at his retirement conference, was the most childish thing I’ve ever seen a great player do. Then in 2008, he teeter-tottered again with the Vikings, saying he would be their QB, followed by claiming his shoulder hurt and he was going to stay retired, then showing up the next day in Minneapolis after Childress picked him up from the airport. I don’t ever want any player to get hurt during a football game, but lets just say I hope Sunday is the capper of #4’s consecutive games started streak.
