All-Star Balloting Already?

Balloting begins today for the All-Star game, to be held July 13 here in Anaheim. Seriously? The season is all of 14 games old, less than 1/10th of the full 162. We’re supposed to make decisions about the best players in the game based on a 10% sample size?
Scott Podsednik leads the majors with a .457 average, followed by other splendid splinters like Franklin Gutierrez, Martin Prado, and Casey McGehee. I’m not saying these guys won’t have good years, but they’re certainly not going to be All-Stars.
Opening the balloting in April ensures that the game remains a popularity contest, rather than any true mark of stardom. In this day and age, however, when fans can see any ballplayer from any team on ESPN, MLB Network, or at their computer at any time, wouldn’t we really prefer to see the best players square off against each other rather than the most noteworthy?
