Live From Dodger Stadium

One upside of the decline of old media: the Dodgers invite one blogger to every home game to sit in the press box and cover the action like a journalist. Tonight, Sunday night is Dodgers Diaries turn, so I’ll be filing reports throughout the game. Please chime in with thoughts, disagreements, arguments, or just to suggest a question for Vin Scully on the sad occasion of Bob Sheppard’s death.

UPDATE: 5:23pm

There's no cheering in the press box, of course. It's the quietest place in the entire stadium during a home run.

UPDATE: 5:58pm

Carlos Silva has been the Cubs’ best pitcher this year, 9-2 with a 2.96 ERA. But he had nothing tonight. He gave up fsix runs on six hits the sixth should have been ruled an out, but the play was bang-bang because Silva failed to cover first base after Xavier Nady’s nice stop on James Loney’s hot shot to first. Replays showed Nady beat Loney to the bag, but Silva didst protest too much and was ejected. Sorry dude, but when you don’t cover first on a routine grounder, you should keep your mouth shut. The ump may know he got it wrong, but he isn’t going to listen long to a guy who clearly didn’t do his own job.

UPDATE: 7:37pm

Best games of Vicente Padilla’s career:

May 10, 2002, 4-0 shutout over Arizona. 2 hits, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts

Apr. 19, 2003, 4-0 shutout over Atlanta. 4 hits, no walks, 4 strikeouts.

Apr. 27, 2008, 10-0 shutout over Minnesota. 7 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts

June 30, 2010 8-2 win over Giants. 7 innings, one run, 3 hits, one walk, 5 strikeouts.

Tonight's outing, 8 innings of two-hit shutout ball, definitely qualifies. The only thing that stood in the way of a complete game was, of course, Joe Torre's mishandling of the bullpen.

R.I.P. Bob Sheppard. Yankee Stadium won't be the same without him. On a happier note, I'm excited that Furcal and Kuo have been added to the NL All-Star roster. Now it feels like the best-performing Dodgers are getting their due. And FINALLY, the AL roster addresses the most egregious omission from the original announcements by adding Jered Weaver. I couldn't believe they would snub the league leader in strikeouts like that, especially when the game is being held at his own ballpark.

Miss Lucy: I think Ely needed a change of scenery. Plus he'll get to work a few things out in AAA. If he's not ready July 19, Monasterios is perfectly capable of being the 5th starter for a while.

Big Game James! Making the highlight reel on ESPN!

Good call by the 1st base ump. I don't know how he saw it correctly from that angle, but Nady definitely missed the tag on the swipe.

Heads-up play by Raffy to take 2nd. So it takes the bat out of Ethier's hands. Don't the Cubs remember James Loney owned them in the 2008 playoffs?

No wonder Sweet Lou has so many gray hairs on his head. But at least Silva didn't pull a complete Zambrano upon getting tossed.

A red carpet for the All-Star Game? Ted Williams is spinning in his cryogenic chamber.

Wow: Geovany Soto has an OBP of .412. Or had, before that whiff.

Looks like the All Star break can't come soon enough for poor Casey Blake. He looks lost out there.

Nice understated tribute to Bob Sheppard by the Dodgers stadium announcer.

What was that, like a six pitch inning for Padilla?

Oh goody, the wave. Clearly a 6-0 game is not enough to hold fan interest at the Ravine.

Hey, Russell is pitching to Martin!

Looks like Russell decided to shave off the fu manchu beard and the porn-star mustache. Wonder why both Ethier and DeWitt are going for the Grizzly Adams look?

Senor Padilla is cruisin' out there! Si, se puede!

Great looking sombrero in the stands at DS. Big and blue and emblazoned with "Viva Los Doyers."

there goes the no-no. A clean double that Ethier had no chance to catch.

Rebooted and got on. What a pleasure to see such good pitching, not to mention offense.

Every time I see a shot of Clayton Kershaw in the dugout, I hear Eddie Murphy's voice from the old SNL routine: Opie Cunningham!

Home Run Derby lineup looks a little lackluster this year. But I guess that's only fitting in the year of the pitcher. Can't believe that yet another unheralded kid came so close to a perfect-o yesterday.

Morgan and Miller so much more bearable when Hershiser's also in the booth.

Any virtue in letting Padilla pitch a complete game?

Cubs seem cursed at first base. Lou seems too defeated by this horrible season to cuss out the umpire and give him a really good dirt-kicking protest. That looked like a bad call.

Garret Anderson sighting in the on-deck circle to pinch-hit for Padilla Bad for two reasons.
username
SaMo Dodger
No reason to warn both benches after the plunking of Dewitt. The only contentious part of the game has been Brian Runge's contretemps with Lou Piniella.
username
Miss Lucy
With that weak fly ball and the advent of the All Star break, can we please oh please oh please pull the plug on the Garret Anderson experiment? He's this year's Sweeney, and given how great he once was, this is getting painful to see. There ain't no lightning left to catch in this bottle.

From the New York Post: ""Know why Orel Hershiser is the best broadcaster in the business?" writes Jon Hayman, Santa Monica, Calif. " 'Cause when he's talking Morgan and Miller ain't."

This was the best regular season game of Vicente Padilla's career. Not counting the playoff game against St. Louis: 7 innings, 4 hits, no runs to wrap up the NLDS.

Jack Rosenthal
Am I right to think Dodger Stadiium is now among the oldest park in the majors? And, Fenway and Wrigley aside, has any aged as gracefully?

And an easy grounder to Raffy for the shutout. Dodgers go into the break on a high note.

Jack Rosenthal: Dodger Stadium is third oldest in baseball, And largest, now that Yankee Stadium has ben downsized.
