Darren Pang's Gaffe Reveals Hockey's Racial Divide

Darren Pang is one of the most respected hockey analysts in the NHL. But his Freudian slip on TSN (thanks to the GetReal Hockey blog for catching this) when talking about the benching of Montreal Canadians defenseman P.K. Subban, who happens to be black, is sure to open up the question of race in professional hockey that has always simmered under the surface.

Basically, Pang said that Subban, whose freewheeling offensive style is apparently not to the liking of Habs coach Jacques Martin, should model himself after another young defenseman -- St. Louis Blues player Alex Pietrangelo, who happens to be white. Pang meant to say that Pietrangelo plays the "right way." But what he said instead was that he plays the "white way." Thus the Freudian slip.

Now, Pang is not a racist and later apologized for the unfortunate remark. But, as hockey becomes more diverse and reaches beyond Saskatchewan farm boys, the racial question is unavoidable.

As much as Don Cherry and others would like every player to have the personality and playing style of Joe Thornton, that just isn't going to happen. And nor should it. The many European players from Russia, Sweden and other countries bring their own unique style to the game. And there are an increasing number of African-American, African-Canadian, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Jewish and other non-WASP players in the league. And that is a great thing for the NHL because not only does it make it more diverse on the ice, but in the stands as well.

An example of the potential to bridge the racial divide in hockey is evident in the Atlanta Thrashers. The city of Atlanta has a large, educated and affluent black community, but many African-Americans traditionally have not embraced hockey because it is seen as a white sport played by mostly rural Canadians. But the Thrashers have a ton of black players -- Dustin Byfuglen, Evander Kane, Akim Aliu, Johnny Oduya, Sebastian Owuya and Nigel Dawes. That represents about 20% of the black players in the NHL. Hopefully that will translate to more fans in the seats at Phillips Arena. The fact that the Thrashers are surprising almost everyone by winning a lot of games so far this year should help as well.

While Pang didn't intend to, his comment will hopefully open up a much needed discussion on race in hockey. The trend towards diversity is a healthy one for hockey, and hopefully there will be a time when the benching of a player is only about his play on the ice, and not the color of his skin.

Here is the video:

Are trying to say that PK was benched because of race? He was beched becuase he was making to many risky plays and as a result had become a defensive liability.

OK Article but this is terrible : "The trend towards diversity is a healthy one for hockey, and hopefully there will be a time when the benching of a player is only about his play on the ice, and not the color of his skin. " You should be embarrassed to write that.

Speaking of gaffes, who's idea was it to tie Panger's innocent mistake to alleged racism? And why should black players in Atlanta result in more black people in the stands? Isn't that a racist assumption? Lame article all the way around.

Gotta agree with Alex. Saying blacks in Atlanta are going to relate to hockey because black kids from Canada play it is like saying I'm going to become a cricket fan if I watch white men from England play cricket. The bigger divide in hockey is geographic, not racial.

You really dont get it do Ya? There were over 10000 fans in the seats in Atlanta the other night for the game . My cousin happens to be one of the black players for Atlanta and he mentioned that you see alot more coming out to the games. WHEN YOU SEE PEOPLE LIKE YOUR SELF PLAIYING IN A SPORT WHERE YOU NORMALLY DONT SEE AT ALL. IT GETS YOU CURIOUS AND WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT IT. IT IS ALL ABOUT GROWING THE GAME, JUST ASK THE NBA AND NFL. ONE OF THE NHL'S NEW SLOGANS IS "HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE " so people better get used to it because we are talented and we are not going away. So if people like Panger dont liike it than dont what it because hockey was not made for just one color of folks and you all have to get over it. The other big leagues did and if the NHL wants to grow its fan base they are doing the right thing and we dont need folks that cant accept change covering hockey.

Just to let Steve and Alex know that some of these players are Americans . Where the NHL is trying and continuing to grow its Fan base. Like i said . IT IS ALL ABOUT GROWING THIS WONDERFUL GAME THAT IS FOR EVERYONE WHO LIKES IT AND TRYING TO GET MORE PEOPLE TO LIKE IT ,NOT JUST THE ONES WHO ARE THE SAME COLOR AS THE ICE.

I say this a lot of Bunk over nothing. If we did not live in this ridiculous walk on eggshell world about being politically correct maybe Panger who in my opinion dose not come across ever in vicious or bigot way. If some comedian had said this everyone would be having a laugh. Knock of the BS over petty bloopers and move on.

Steve, settle down. No one is saying blacks shouldn't play hockey. Darren Pang didn't say it. He apologized for a slip of the tongue! This article is making an issue where none exists. As for black players being American... are they from Atlanta, or the northern States where most American players come from? The geographic divide isn't between Canada & the US, it's between winter and non-winter climates. That's got nothing to do with race. Finally, if blacks will only watch other blacks play hockey, then who's got a problem with race?

I was watching the show when Pang said it; it sounded more like an "Elmer Fudd" than a "Sigmund Freud" to me.

Ridiculous article. Obviously a slip of the tongue and to suggest it was anything else is extremely poor journalism.

politically correct BS
From a strictly politically correct standpoint, isnt it technically racist for John to say "he was obviously thinking it"??? This implies you ruled out the other possibilities (since you believe they lack the same level of truth) and therefore connect blacks to bad behaviour, which from your logic also makes you racist. Panger could easily just have had a slip of the tongue, or had an image of the WHITE guy in his head (pietrangelo) as he was talking about him, which led to him saying white, not right. I realize you're obv. not racist but political correctness is a joke

totally moronic to think that mistakenly saying "white" instead of "right" (and then correcting it immediately upon saying it) implies widespread racism in hockey
