Wayne Gretzky resigned as head coach of the troubled Phoenix Coyotes franchise today and former Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett will replace him.

Gretzky announced his decision on his website this morning and the Coyotes announced the hiring of Tippet at a 3 p.m. PST press conference at Jobing.com Arena.

Gretzky quit after four disappointing seasons with the club, in which the Coyotes failed to make the playoffs and had a losing record of 143-161-24.

After six seasons with the Stars, Tippett takes over a franchise with an uncertain future in Phoenix and a promising crop of young talented players on the ice.
