In any draft, every owner’s first instinct is to target those players who provide across-the-board production. Whether you play in a 5x5 league of a 9x9 league, if Prince Fielder is available, you take him, stolen bases be damned. We are at the point in this young season, however, where it is becoming clear that some stats are elusive and worth pursuing via the waiver wire or a trade.
Nick Johnson— Can I really endorse a guy who bats second in the potent Yankee lineup yet musters only a .158 batting average and a .289 slugging percentage? Well, consider that Johnson has not yet begun to hit and yet he still owns a nifty .407 OBP. Consider, furthermore, that Mark Teixeira has also not found himself yet. You can bet your Grandma’s apple pie that when he does heat up, Johnson will stand to see a hearty diet of fastballs and be driven in a boatload of times.
Suggestion— He may not be the model of good health, but at 17% Yahoo! Ownership, grab him now and pay the cheap price for some healthy numbers in the coming weeks. If only for the walks, he carries some decent immediate value if your league counts the category.
Julio Borbon— Normally, I would list Borbon alongside -- if not ahead of -- Rajai Davis as a stolen base threat not floating around on the waiver wire. However, due to a miserable start (3 for 36 with 0 walks, 1 stolen base and 1 run scored as of 4/19/10), Borbon is being dropped at an epic clip. He sits at 49% ownership in Yahoo! Leagues. Although Borbon will not face many lefties anytime soon and has all but forfeited the leadoff spot in the short term to Elvis Andrus, he is still a guy who hit consistently above .300 in the minors and put up a .376 OBP with 19 stolen bases in 157 at bats last season.
Suggestion— Pick him up and stash him if you can. I can hardly endorse throwing this guy in an active lineup for any fantasy format, but a month from now he could very well have found himself and as they say, speed does not slump.
Alberto Callaspo— Callaspo is owned in only 26% of Yahoo! Leagues, yet this 2B/3B eligible batsmith is a very handy player in all formats. Whether you are the owner of Brian Roberts or Aaron Hill, or otherwise have a hole in your lineup, Callaspo is a very consistent player who rewards owners in leagues that count doubles (41 last season) and triples (8 last season). Even though Alex Gordon has returned, Chris Getz is injured and Callaspo is too consistent for KC to bench. He is also fresh off a 2 HR, 6 RBI performance, which never hurts.
Suggestion— Pick him up and find a way to get him in your lineup to spell slumping 2B and 3B. Alternately, he makes for a fine utility option for owner’s already rich in power but craving runs scored and a healthy batting average with some decent RBI production from the 6 hole.
