Behind Enemy Lines

We are watching the highly anticipated U.S.-Canada hockey game at the MPC (Main Press Center) bar. There are two TVs in the bar area and an obvious separation between the two sides.

Our side, Team USA, consists of eight GW students and two USOC staff members. The other side of the bar is stacked with at least 20 Canadians from various press outlets. There is an obvious divide between sides, especially when either side erupts in cheer.

Being from Pittsburgh, I am naturally a Sidney Crosby fan. After being in Canada, I have realized the Canadians have a much stronger love affair with Sid the Kid than we do in the Burgh.

Go USA!!!

All Packed Up, Snowhere To Go

As I write this, I am supposed to be on a flight to Vancouver. However, the record-breaking snow D.C. received over the past week has made it difficult to get out of my house, let alone out of the country. As I sit around today watching the news, I hear that the Olympic Games are bringing snow in because they aren't getting enough. Maybe if I figure out a way to pack up some of the 40 inches we have received, they will find a way to get me there. I also heard that one of the U.S. figure skating pairs might miss the Opening Ceremony because they are stuck in Philadelphia. I guess they are in a worse position than me because I just planned on watching them from a bar; they were going to get to be a part of them.

From a distance, Vancouver does not seem much different than a northern U.S. city. It seems like there is a genuine excitement from the people to host them, so we should get along fine because I am genuinely excited to be going. The dollar values are pretty similar right now, but I will probably still exchange some cash in the airport just so it is easier for the shuttle ride from the airport to the hostel.

Besides snow-related stories, I think the most intriguing story right now is Lindsey Vonn. She has gone from possibly winning up to five medals to not participating due to a shin injury. The rivalry between Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin carrying over to Canada v. Russia will also be interesting. I am going to a Russian hockey game so I am excited to see that.

My shuttle is now picking me up Friday morning at 4:38. Hopefully I can finally get out and actually get to Vancouver, where apparently the weather is nicer than it is here!
