As I write this, I am supposed to be on a flight to Vancouver. However, the record-breaking snow D.C. received over the past week has made it difficult to get out of my house, let alone out of the country. As I sit around today watching the news, I hear that the Olympic Games are bringing snow in because they aren't getting enough. Maybe if I figure out a way to pack up some of the 40 inches we have received, they will find a way to get me there. I also heard that one of the U.S. figure skating pairs might miss the Opening Ceremony because they are stuck in Philadelphia. I guess they are in a worse position than me because I just planned on watching them from a bar; they were going to get to be a part of them.
From a distance, Vancouver does not seem much different than a northern U.S. city. It seems like there is a genuine excitement from the people to host them, so we should get along fine because I am genuinely excited to be going. The dollar values are pretty similar right now, but I will probably still exchange some cash in the airport just so it is easier for the shuttle ride from the airport to the hostel.
Besides snow-related stories, I think the most intriguing story right now is Lindsey Vonn. She has gone from possibly winning up to five medals to not participating due to a shin injury. The rivalry between Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin carrying over to Canada v. Russia will also be interesting. I am going to a Russian hockey game so I am excited to see that.
My shuttle is now picking me up Friday morning at 4:38. Hopefully I can finally get out and actually get to Vancouver, where apparently the weather is nicer than it is here!
